Which school

Hello, We will be new in the American System starting from the next year close to Raleight, NC in the triangle Area.

I have seen that public schools on that area, but they do not have a good rate where the houses are available to rent, so I would like to  understand about Magnet and Charter Schools, Can some one explain? How can I apply? I have a kid attending elementary and the other one will start Middle School.
