This article will help you understand how to log in to SchoolMessenger Communicate from PowerSchool, and how to create recipient lists in PowerSchool and send Communicate broadcasts to those lists.

Logging in to SchoolMessenger using the PowerSchool Single Sign On

  1. The PowerSchool Start Page:
    Once logged in to PowerSchool, you'll typically be at the Start Page. The left menu is where we'll find our single sign on options. 

  2. The Message Sender Option:
    This option will allow you to send broadcasts using lists created in PowerSchool. This option will be discussed in more detail later in this learning. 

  3. The SchoolMessenger Link:
    This option allows you to log directly in to SchoolMessenger from within PowerSchool. 

    NOTE: For this to work, the usernames in both PowerSchool and SchoolMessenger Communicate must be identical

 

If you wish to change your SchoolMessenger Communicate password to match your PowerSchool password, you can follow these steps

 

Note: Changing the passwords to match is not required. If you wish to change your SchoolMessenger password, click the markers below to guide you

  1. The Account Button:
    After clicking the SchoolMessenger link in the lower left of the PowerSchool menu, you'll be on the Communicate dashboard.  Click "Account" in the upper right. 

  2. The Password Field:
    You can change your password here to match your PowerSchool password.  Note that SchoolMessenger passwords must be at least 5 characters by default (longer if your district requires it), and must contain at least one number or special character, such as an exclamation point. If your PowerSchool password does not meet those criteria, you will not be able to change the password here to match your PowerSchool password. 

 

Starting Communicate Broadcasts from Within PowerSchool

  1. Creating PowerSchool Lists:
    You can create selection lists within PowerSchool. Use the options here to select those you wish to receive your SchoolMessenger Communicate Broadcast.  
  2. The Message Sender Link:
    Once your selection list is created, click Message Sender in the left Menu. This will launch the Message Sender in SchoolMessenger Communicate, using the PowerSchool list as your Recipient List.

  1. The Subject:
    Once the Message Sender launches from within PowerSchool, you'll be taken to the first step of the Message Sender process. The Subject will automatically be set to "New Message for ... ". It is recommended you change this subject to something which reflects the content of your Broadcast. 

  2. The List Name:
    By default, the list you brought over from PowerSchool will be called "PowerSchool Selection List".


    Note: this cannot be changed here, and the list you created in PowerSchool cannot be saved in SchoolMessenger. It may be possible to save it for reuse in PowerSchool.

    You can add lists created in SchoolMessenger to this Broadcast, meaning you could have lists both from within PowerSchool and Communicate.
