School records should always list the students legal names. Students have been denied scholarships and courts will not accept school records that do not list the legal name.

@K8_teaches There is literally a preferred name field for Staff in PowerSchool. It is called "PreferredName" (the field itself has no quotes).

If you are in the United States, this depends on the State you live in. In NY, for instance, NYSED guidance is to use the student's preferred name in the SIS. But that is guidance, not a law.
