Canvas Exemptions in PowerSchool

When a teacher marks an assignment as exempt in Canvas it is showing not only as a Zero, but also with an F in PowerSchool. Teachers are not submitting a point value simply selecting to exempt the grade. Yes, this is not calculated in the final grade and is truly exempt, but students and parents are freaking out over it. It is very alarming and confusing for students and parents. PowerSchool claims it is Canvas that has made this decision and Canvas claims it was PowerSchool. I am not sure why it is no longer displaying as just a purple slash. Any ideas of feedback on why this change was made, who made it, and can it be changed?
