How To: Ensure CWTA Short Code Compliance

All Canadian institutions using SchoolMessenger Communicate must comply with the regulations outlined in the Canadian Common Short Code Application Guidelines. The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) works with application providers to ensure compliance.

Steps for CWTA Compliance

  • SMS alerts cannot be the only method of communicating alerts to a community
    • A secondary communication method such as email, push notification, or voice call, is required
  • Do not advertise SchoolMessenger Communicate as an emergency alert service
    • Doing so is in direct violation of CWTA guidelines
  • Standard message rates must be listed and clearly defined, particularly when users are opting in to text
    • Standard message and data rates may apply or Std msg & data rates may apply are suitable messages
