Hi,
I would like to suggest that Powerschool use the power of artificial intelligence to help teachers write comments.
Here's my story:
When I enter assignments in Powerschool, I write the learning objective under "description."
When writing quarterly report card comments, I look at which assignments and learning objectives the student was strong in and which ones they struggled with. Then I tell parents what the child mastered and what the child needs to work on. I would love it if AI could do this summarization for me - telling me each child's strengths and weaknesses when I prepare to write the general comments.
Here's an example of what my comments look like with a student name change:
I’m very proud of Dottie McStuffins. She has made much progress in reading. This quarter she studied figurative language, how to read poetry, how to read and spell two-syllable words, and how to write sentences better. Dottie is able to comprehend poems and write with figurative language (like “the wind was angry”). However, she should work on writing simple sentences and reading two-syllable words. You can help at home by having her write in the writing workbook nightly and by reading some decodable books that I am sending home with her.
As you can see, my comments are detailed and based on specific tasks attached to her assignments in the gradebook. I could see she mastered figurative language and poetry by looking at those assignments. I could tell she did not master writing assignments or reading two-syllable words by looking at those assignments. AI could make the process easier for me.
AI could also tell me as I'm typing comments if a student has a particularly low score or missing assignment that is affecting their overall grade. Otherwise, I have to look through their scores myself to find out why that student has a D or F.
An additional idea is that Powerschool could have a COMMENT BANK that allows me to keep comments that I write often. AI could suggest comments for me from that bank (in times when it notices that might be helpful).
Thank you for considering my suggestions.
