Slack workspace for PowerSchool

Is anyone aware of a Slack workspace for developers/users of PowerSchool? If not I'm considering creating one.

Thanks,

Paul Shippy

@tpaul I am not aware of any Slack groups for PowerSchool. What is you intent by creating one and not using these forums? I am a Slack user and not sure how I would leverage that tool for the work I do in PowerSchool.

Additionally, would it have greater benefit than the PSUG mailing list/forum?

@JeromeO I agree to an extent. Forums have their place as do "chat rooms". I consider the free version of Slack as more of a chat room with instant messaging and notifications. Forums, for me, provide more of a historical transcript of topics. In Slack, topics can get intermixed so quickly that messages trails can get lost.

My 2¢

That was what I had found when I was part of a Windows system deployment Slack channel. While the leaders of the group were definitely the industry heavyweights to learn from, I always felt like I was jumping into the middle of a conversation and had no idea what was going on, especially if the latest message was "hey, thanks for the assist!"  "NP."

Huh?  What did I miss?  **scroll scroll scroll....**  Wait, this is a side-conversation.  Who's talking about what now?

I suppose if it was more internally managed with more closely aligned teams and specific projects in mind, then it could be useful.

I'm not poo-pooing the idea of a PS dev/customization Slack channel entirely.  Just speculating on the "value-add proposition," so to speak, since I suspect that for many of us, we wear many other hats in our respective schools & districts 🙂

@JeromeO  @tpaul  Hey, if a Slack channel opened up for PowerSchool users, I'd jump in just to get the experience and make my own decision about the value for me. I am always looking to learn from others.

@JeromeO @Dave_Tchozewski Thank you for your interest and questions!

I think anyone who has used slack understands the value proposition for it as a communication tool. A few reasons I think it could be useful:

  • Near real-time collaboration.
  • Private/one-on-one communication that doesn't involve email.
  • Well designed mobile/desktop/web apps
  • Dynamic channels that don't depend on administrators to create a "board"

Ultimately, I personally prefer the user interface of slack to email and web forums. So that's the primary driver for me.

Is anyone else interested?

Thanks,

Paul

Never got around to setting it up and didn't see much interest. I will see if I can set it up soonish if you don't beat me to it.
