ASL Certification

Hello, What is the fastest and approved method to becoming a certified ASL teacher for PowerSchool? I have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and graduated in 2018 as a Deaf Support Specialist.  I have taught Signing Naturally ASL1 for 3 years and am starting my second year teaching Signing Naturally 7-9 this year to homeschoolers. I would like to teach ASL virtually and feel that I have the experience and references to prove that I can do it well.

Hi @TillyCopley

Thank you for the query!

Currently, the American Sign Language Certification training is not offered by PowerSchool. However, we encourage other PowerSchool Community members to share their insights on this topic if they had any prior experience.

I would welcome any help. I have heard of Texas Teachers but I would have to pay them back about $5000 once I am placed in a school district. I was wondering if there was a less expensive route.  May all you teachers out there have a fantastic year as you teach students and impact not only them but their family tree for generations to come!

Hi Tilly - I am a certified ASL Teacher.  Go to the ASLTA.org website to get information on how to become a certified ASL Teacher.  Unfortunately, the credentials you listed will not be sufficient.  You can be comepletely fluent in a language and not be able to teach it.  There should be some resources listed on ASLTA about where you can find classes in your area. But the most important thing is to become involved in your local Deaf community. You can't teach their language without knowing them! If you have any other questions, I'm happy to help if I can
