SIS Installation Step 2a: Server Purchase and Installation

1. Purchase a Server

In order to enjoy the full support of PowerSchool's Technical Support department, it will be necessary to establish an environment that meets the minimum system requirements for PowerSchool . It is important to note that your student population and intended choice of gradebook functionality will influence the requisite elements of your server(s), so great care should be given to understanding the system requirements. Please consult with your Implementation Project Manager or TSG in the event you have questions regarding server compatibility.

You are welcome to procure the certified hardware from a vendor of your choice, but we encourage you to consider taking advantage of the competitive discounts that Pearson offers its customers. Please contact your account executive or TSG for more information concerning our hardware services and pricing.

NOTE: While not mandatory, Pearson strongly recommends that servers intended to house PowerSchool be dedicated for such a purpose, and discourages our customers from installing or running other applications on those servers; doing so will help minimize the possibility of operational conflict that might impair the performance of the application and/or database.

NOTE: For those customers opting to purchase PowerSchool deployment services rather than performing the installation themselves, it is important to note that the installation of a secondary instance for testing, training, or other ancillary purposes must be performed during the same timeframe as the production instance in order to enjoy significantly discounted costs for the provision of the additional instance of PowerSchool.  For customers interested in purchasing this service, please submit a purchase order for $500 to 916.288.1590 (or send an email to tsghelpdesk@pearson.com for more information) prior to the submission of either installation request.  Once we have verified receipt, you will be directed to submit both installation requests consecutively.

2. Install Your Server

To prepare your server, please ensure the completion of the following tasks:

  • Establish ethernet connectivity between the server(s) and a Local Area Network ("LAN"). Each member of your staff requiring access to the application will need access to a computer that has connectivity to the LAN.
  • Assign a local (private) static IP address to your server. NOTE: PowerSchool only supports the use of one (1) Network Interface Card ("NIC").
  • Verify Internet accessibility from your server.
  • Verify your public Wide Area Network ("WAN") IP address. If this is unknown, you can verify your primary WAN address at WhatismyIP.com. NOTE: If you have multiple public addresses, this tool will only detect your router's primary address.
  • Acquire a Fully Qualified Domain Name ("FQDN") for use with the requisite image server. An image server renders the images and .gif files used by PowerSchool Premier and enhances the performance of the application.

3. Configure Your Network

It will be necessary to configure your firewall to allow for PowerSchool to be successfully deployed and/or supported. Please note that settings or terminology may differ according to the brand and model of your firewall. PowerSchool requires port forwarding from the public IP address to the private IP address (sometimes known as Port Address Translation) for the following ports:

  • PowerSchool and PowerTeacher: TCP Port 80 (HTTP). TCP Port 443 (HTTPS) may be used for Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
  • Image Server: TCP Port 5071 or TCP Port 80 if on a dedicated server
  • ReportWorks: TCP Port 7880 or TCP Port 8443 for Secure Socket Layer (SSL)

To verify the correct configuration of the ports indicated above, click here and enter the specified port numbers. An indication that your IP address "isn't responding" on the port number means that the port number has not been configured correctly.

Questions concerning this information should be directed to your Implementation Project Manager.  Otherwise, please proceed to SIS Installation Step 2b: Deployment Preparation once the tasks have been completed.
