Q&A: PowerSchool-Hosted to Self-Hosted Migration

Question

How will the migration to the self-hosted environment take place?

Answer

TSG will obtain a copy of your PowerSchool database from the PowerSchool-Hosted environment, remotely install PowerSchool on the server you provide and migrate your instance to the self-hosted environment.  The database transfer will be validated to ensure all data is intact after the service is completed.

Question

Is it mandatory that I complete my scheduling process and/or perform the end of year process before the migration?

Answer

No, the migration to the self- hosted environment can occur at any time of the year.

Question

Once I have purchased the service, how long will it take before I am migrated?

Answer

Depending upon the availability of TSG resources, the migration process may require as little as a few days to complete, but typically benefits from a week or more of preparation.

Question

How long does the migration take?

Answer

The duration of the migration to the self-hosted environment varies from customer to customer and cannot be predicted prior to its initiation. While the update can be completed in as little as a few hours, conditions and circumstances outside of TSG's control or influence may prolong the procedure. Factors influencing the duration of the migration include the speed of the customer's network and the integrity of the data. Unless noted otherwise, all PowerSchool-Hosted to Self-Hosted migrations are scheduled for two-day deployment windows (Mon-Tue or Wed-Thu), and customers should expect the completion of their server migration within this deployment window for all but the most extreme cases.

Question

Can I use PowerSchool during the migration procedure?

Answer

No, once the migration has commenced on the first day of the deployment window, no users should log into PowerSchool much less modify the data that resides there; doing so would threaten the success of the procedure.

Question

When will migrations be performed?

Answer

In order to meet the needs of our customers and allow them to minimize or eliminate the possibility of downtime, TSG offers the service twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. There will be an additional cost for overnight or weekend services.  The standard two-day service windows are (Monday-Tuesday) and (Wednesday - Thursday)

Question

What is an Image Server, why do I need one and what must I provide?

Answer

An image server is a virtual asset that is dedicated to the rendering or processing of the images found within PowerSchool.  These images are the .gif files located within the application's directory that contribute to the look and feel of PowerSchool.  Common images include the logos and command buttons visible throughout the application.

Customers are not required to procure a dedicated server for the images, and it is not necessary that a separate image server meet the same system requirements as the production server(s).  The installation and use of Apache is necessary to facilitate the exchange of the pertinent files between servers, and can be downloaded at no cost.

PowerSchool requires an image server as a result of substantial performance testing and troubleshooting that indicates a significant increase in performance capability when the rendering of images is segregated from the application.  PowerSchool has determined that the rendering of the images found within PowerSchool in a manner that is segregated from the processing of transactions has a positive benefit to the overall performance of the application.

Customers must provide a subdomain name if the image server will reside on the same server as the application, or a fully qualified domain name ("FQDN") if the image server will reside on a separate server.  Should the domain or subdomain name not already be available from within the customer's network allocation, arrangements may be made to purchase the necessary entry from their Internet Service Provider.
