Reports downloading in .txt instead of .csv

I am very new to Powerschool - I am trying to download a report and it is downloading in .text instead of my usual .csv file.  I am sure I changed something but I can not figure out how to get it back to .csv

Can someone help me?

Thanks!

That's unfortunately a legacy from long ago that's never been addressed in PowerSchool.  The .text is actually a tab-delimited text file, so it'll open in Excel just fine.  It's just a hassle because ".text" is not a standard extension.

The file type export will vary depending on which function you're using, which is part of the frustration.

There had been multiple enhancement requests over several years for PowerSchool to improve consistency in export data types, but have thus far gone unheeded.  I submitted this one before enhancements were migrated from PowerSource to Community to try to consolidate several past issues: https://powerschool-enhancements.ideas.aha.io/ideas/SIS-I-6415

Since there's no resolution to this coming in the immediate future, your choices will be to rename the file with a .txt entension instead of .text, open in Excel, then save as a CSV, or associate the file extension with Excel manually.

My PS administrator corrected this on my desktop, but not my laptop. When I do a Quick Export, the file opens in WordPad. Does anyone know how to change it to open in Excel? I know it's been done on one device but not others, so is the issue device related?

Hi @skirkland,

The default extension for a quick export file is .text. PowerSchool does not provide the option to change the default extension of a quick export file. If the browser has not associated .text files with any applications, the user will be prompted to save the file or open the file in an application. When choosing to save the quick export file to the client computer, the file can be renamed and the extension can be changed."

I recommend reviewing this article for more information. Additionally, you can check our online enhancement requests on the Ideas Portal. From there you can submit a request asking for this functionality, and you can check existing requests. You can also add comments to existing requests and/or vote for them.
