New Standards of Learning (SOLs) are scheduled to be activated across many districts and states. If this is one of your states this year this documentation should help show how to bring locally created content to the new SOLs. When aligning this content there are a few things you will need to keep in mind in order to ensure an effective use of assessments. Here is a suggested process to follow when aligning content:

  1. Locate an exam that was created within your district that should be aligned to the old standard, to be assigned in the future.
  2. Audit all items on the exam, and align necessary items to both the old year and new year standards. ex. 2009 and 2016 SOLs (detailed instructions on this process below).
  3. Duplicate the exam and map it to the 2016 Math SOLs.

Aligning items to both SOL sets will keep the data integrity of the item, as well as keep it available for future testing. If an exam is mapped to current (2016) SOLs, while some of the items remain mapped to expired (2009) SOLs, the reporting will be split across reporting templates and could cause discrepancies in reporting.

You will want to make sure that the SOLs on which you will be assessing your students are the only SOLs to which your courses are mapped. For example, if you are testing on the 2016 SOLs, you will want to map your courses to the 2016 SOLs, to allow the appropriate access.

Following are some detailed instructions on how to map your courses, align items, and request realignment. If you have further questions, please contact Support via e-mail (aasupport@powerschool.com), phone (866-434-6276 Press 1 and then 7), or via Live Assist.

Course Mapping

Courses are assigned to subjects during the initial upload process. In some instances, the subject mapped to a particular course may need to be changed (i.e. MATH-8 to MATH-A or ENGL-6 to ENGL-7).

If the subjects that are mapped to a particular course need to be changed,

  1. Hover over “Admin” and select “Classroom Manager” from the drop-down menu.
  2. Select the appropriate “Staff” account from the list on the left.
  3. Under the “Schedule” accordion bar on the right, right-click the course that needs mapping changes.
  4. Select “Edit” from the drop-down menu.

Aligning Items

Locally created content (items, resources, and exams made within the district) must be realigned if they meet the new SOL set. If these items are not realigned, they will be removed from the ‘Assessment Library’ Item Bank and will no longer be able to be used once the old SOLs are deactivated. To realign items,

  1. Navigate to the item in ‘Assessment Library.’
  2. Right-click on the item and select, “Edit Item,” as shown in the screenshot.

  1. Once you have selected “Edit Item,” the “Edit Item” box will pop up. Here, you can add the new SOL set. You will want to select the “Subjects” drop down under the “Information” tab. (In this example, the new SOLs are the “Transition Standards.” Often, they will be marked as “Current.”

  1. From the “Subject” drop down, you will want to select the standard from the “Transition Standards” as shown here:

  1. Once you have clicked that arrow (shown above), you will want to click “Select” and then “” The item will then be aligned to both Transition and Current Standards.
  2. Next, you will want to duplicate the exam and add the Transition Standards.
  3. First, you will want to right click on the exam and select “Duplicate Exam.”Documentation 8.PNG
  4. On the “Duplicate Exam” box that pops up, you will want to change the “Subjects” drop down to the new SOL set.

Request for PowerSchool Realignment

If you have an immediate need to use the item, you will want to right click on the item, and select “Create New Version.” Then, you can follow the before mentioned steps to align the item to the new SOLs. If you encounter an item that was created by PowerSchool that you believe should be realigned to the Current Standards, please reach out to Support via e-mail (aasupport@powerschool.com) and include the Question, Resource or Exam ID, and our Content Team will review your request and align if deemed to align fully to the new SOLs.
