Creating a “Hot Spot” Item

In addition to creating items using the standard multiple choice format, PowerSchool Assessment & Analytics offers the ability to create items using the “Hot Spot” format of “Technology Enhanced Items (TEI).”

Hot Spot (TEI)” items allow for up to ten answer choices and more than one correct student response.

To view “Hot Spot” items:

1. From the “Dashboard,” select “Assessment Library.”
2. Select the appropriate “Subject” from the drop-down menu.
3. Open the item filter by clicking the “gear” icon to the right of “Items,” circled in blue in the image below.
4. Click the drop-down menu beside “Item Type.”
5. Select “Hot Spot,” indicated by a pink arrow, or “All Types” from the list.
*Note: To save the filter settings, check the box to the left of “Save as default.”
6. Click “Ok,” circled in yellow.

To create a new “Hot Spot” item:

*Note: Due to constraints placed by paper/pencil test documents, exams containing “Hot Spot” items cannot be administered via paper/pencil test sessions.

1. Follow the steps outlined in the section titled, Creating a New Item.
2. Select “Hot Spot” from the “Item Wizard.”
3. Click “Next.”

4. Select one of the three available layouts. The chosen layout determines the appearance of the item in the “Item Editor” and “PowerTest.”
5. Click “Next.”

The next page of the “Item Wizard” allows for selections to be made regarding the inclusion of directions, the number of stems to include in the item, the number of “Choices,” and the number of columns for answer choice organization.

6. Check the box to the right of “Directions,” indicated with a blue arrow, to include a field in the “Item Editor” for directions.
7. Click the drop-down to the right of “Number of Stems” to select the number of stems to include.
*Note: An item may have no more than two stems.
8. Click the drop-down to the right of “Number of Choices” to select the number of available answer choices.
*Note: “Hot Spot” items may have a maximum of ten choices.
9. Click the drop-down menu to the right of “Number of Columns” to select the number of columns for answer choice organization.
*Note: “Hot Spot” items may have a maximum of ten columns.
10. Click “Next,” circled in pink.

11. The “Item Wizard” will provide a summary page with a list of the selections made throughout the wizard. Review the selected options.
a. To make changes to selections, click “Back,” circled in blue.
b. To confirm the selections and to continue creating the test item, click “Done,” circled in orange.

12. The “Create Item” window opens with the “Information” tab displayed.
*Note: For instructions regarding the “Information” tab, refer to steps 12 through 15 under Creating a Multiple Choice Item.

13. Click the “Content” tab.
14. If directions were selected, click the “Directions” field to open the editing window. As the directions are typed, a preview of the text appears.

a. To delete the “Directions” field, right-click the “Directions” field and select “Remove Directions.”

b. To add the “Directions” field, right-click the “Stem” field and select “Add Directions” from the drop-down menu.

15. Click the “Stem” field to open the editing window. As the stem is typed, a preview of the text appears.

To delete a “Stem,” right-click on the “Stem” field and select “Remove Stem.”

16. Click within an “Option” field to open the editing window. As the answer choice is typed, a preview of the text appears.
The correct answer defaults to Option 1.
To set a different option as the correct answer:

a. Click within the “Option” field for Option 1.
b. Uncheck the box to the left of “Correct?” in the editing window, circled in blue in the following image.

*Note: An item may also be marked incorrect by right-clicking the “Option” field and selecting “Mark Incorrect” from the drop-down menu.

c. Click within another “Option” field.
d. Check the box to the left of “Correct?” to mark the option as the correct answer.

*Note: An item may also be marked correct by right-clicking an “Option” field and selecting “Mark Correct” from the drop-down menu.

e. To lock an answer option in its current order, check the box to the left of “Locked?”, circled in pink in the following image.

*Note: An option may also be locked by right-clicking an “Option” field and selecting “Lock” from the drop-down menu.

f. To add a column, right-click an option and select “Add Column” from the drop-down menu, indicated by a blue arrow in the following image.
g. To remove a column, right-click an option within the column to be deleted and select “Remove Column” from the drop-down menu, indicated by a pink arrow.

17. After entering and locking options as necessary for a “Hot Spot” item:

a. Click the drop-down to the right of “Max Student Selections,” circled in blue in the following image, to select the preferred maximum number of allowed student selections (i.e. if an item has three correct answers, a user may wish to limit the number of student responses to “3”).
b. Click “Create” in the lower right corner, shown circled in pink.
