Creating a “Drag and Drop” Item

PowerSchool Assessment & Analytics offers the ability to create new items using the “Drag and Drop” Technology Enhanced Item (TEI) format. “Drag and Drop” items can include up to ten “Draggers.”

To view “Drag and Drop” items within the item bank:

1. From the “Dashboard,” select “Assessment Library.”
2. Select the appropriate “Subject” from the drop-down menu.
3. Open the item filter by clicking the gear icon to the right of “Items,” circled in blue in the following image.
4. Click the drop-down menu beside “Item Type.”
5. Select “Drag Drop,” indicated by a pink arrow, or “All Types” from the list.
*Note: To save the filter settings, check the box to the left of “Save as default.”
6. Click “Ok,” circled in yellow.

*Note: Due to constraints placed by paper/pencil test documents, exams containing “Drag and Drop” items cannot be administered via paper/pencil test sessions.

To create a new “Drag and Drop” item:

1. Follow the steps outlined in the section titled, Creating a New Item.
2. Select “Drag and Drop” from the “Item Wizard.”
3. Double-click the item type or click “Next.”

4. Select one of the three available layouts. The chosen layout determines the appearance of the item in the “Item Editor” and “PowerTest.”
5. Double-click the selected layout or click “Next.”

The next page of the “Item Wizard” allows for selections to be made regarding the inclusion of directions, the number of stems to include in the item, and the number of “Draggers.”

6. Check the box to the right of “Directions,” indicated with a blue arrow in the following image, to include a field in the “Item Editor” for directions.
7. Click the drop-down to the right of “Number of Stems” to select the number of stems to include.
*Note: An item may have no more than two stems.
8. Click the drop-down to the right of “Draggers” to select the number of “Draggers” to include.
*Note: An item may have no more than ten “Draggers.”
9. Click “Next,” shown circled in pink in the following image.

10. The “Item Wizard” will provide a summary page with a list of the selections made throughout the wizard. Review the selected options.

a. To make changes to selections, click “Back,” circled in blue in the following image.
b. To confirm the selections and to continue creating the test item, click “Done,” circled in pink in the following image.

11. The “Create Item” window opens with the “Information” tab displayed, circled in blue in the following image.
*Note: For instructions regarding the “Information” tab, refer to steps 12 through 16 under Creating a Multiple Choice Item.

12. Click the “Content” tab.
13. If directions were selected, click the “Directions” field to open the editing window. As the directions are typed, a preview of the text appears.

a. To delete the “Directions” field, right-click the “Directions” field and select “Remove Directions.”

b. To add the “Directions” field, right-click a “Stem” field and select “Add Directions” from the drop-down menu.

14. Click a “Stem” field to open the editing window. As the stem is typed, a preview of the text appears.
*Note: The “Item Writing Tools” are available when entering “Stems,” and “Draggers.”

a. To add an additional “Stem,” right-click the “Stem” field and select “Add Stem.”

b. To delete a “Stem,” right-click the “Stem” field and select “Remove Stem.”

15. Click “Add Image,” to add an image to the “Action Area.”
*Note: “Drag and Drop” items must include an image in the “Action Area.”

Any image uploaded into a “Drag and Drop” item will retain its size. Image sizes do not automatically adjust to fill the “Action Area.” Images must be edited to the necessary size prior to being uploaded into the item.

*Note: The maximum size for an image being uploaded into the “Action Area” is 950 x 550 pixels.

16. Once uploaded, click the image, hold, and drag the image to the desired location within the “Action Area.”

To delete an image, click “Delete Image,” shown circled in the image below.

Unlike entering one correct answer and three distracters for “Multiple Choice” items, “Drag and Drop” items may include up to ten “Draggers,” or answer options. Students must place each “Dragger” within its corresponding “Bay” in the “Action Area” for the item to be scored as correct.

When creating a new “Drag and Drop” item, “Bays” are located on the left and “Draggers” are found on the right.

17. Click within a “Dragger” field on the right to enter an answer. As shown in the following image, a green outline will appear around the selected “Dragger” as well as around the corresponding “Bay.”

The width of the “Dragger” field may be adjusted using the blue bar on the right of the “Dragger” column, indicated with the blue arrow in the following image. Click, hold, and slide the bar from left or right to adjust the width of the column.

a. To remove a “Dragger,” right-click on a “Dragger” field and select “Remove Dragger” from the drop-down menu, indicated with a blue arrow in the following image.

b. To add a “Dragger,” right-click on a “Dragger” field and select “Add Dragger” from the drop-down menu, indicated with a pink arrow in the following image.

c. To add a “Column,” right-click on a “Dragger” field and select “Add Column” from the drop-down menu, indicated with a yellow arrow in the following image.

18. Drag each “Bay” on the left to the desired locations within the “Action Area,” as indicated with the blue arrow in the following image.

19. Click, hold and drag the column, or columns, of “Draggers” on the desired location within the “Action Area.” This determines the placement of the draggers when viewing the item in PowerTest.
20. Once all “Draggers” have been entered and the “Bays” have been placed in their desired location, click “Create” to complete the item creation process.
