At PowerSchool EDGE, we’re bringing together the brightest minds in K-12 education to connect, learn, and grow. So we’re proud to announce that Erin Gruwell will be a keynote speaker at our inaugural customer event!
In a Long Beach district where gang violence and racial tension persisted, Erin found a way to connect with her English students. Instead of ignoring the challenges the young students faced beyond the classroom, Erin chose to embrace them and encouraged her students to share their raw experiences in journals.
After hearing each other’s stories and realizing how much they had in common, Erin and her students formed a diverse and accepting family that they named the “Freedom Writers” after the 1960s Civil Rights activists, the Freedom Riders. Their honest and harrowing stories were eventually published in The Freedom Writers Diary, which became an instant New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a 2007 film called Freedom Writers.
After all her 150 students graduated, they went on to create the Freedom Writers Foundation to advocate for all students and teachers by providing tools that facilitate student-centered learning, improve overall academic performance, and increase teacher retention.
And now, Erin Gruwell is heading to EDGE to speak about her experiences and what she hopes to see in the future of K-12 education.
